A Nightmare on Elm Street Remake - Trailer

One of our most favorite horror film series of all time, A Nightmare on Elm Street has been remade, like a ton of other movies lately, and we have the first trailer from the film. We'll definitely be checking this one out, but we totally miss Robert Englund as Freddie Krueger. This version features Jackie Earl Hailey as the knife-glove wielding villain (he's the guy who played long-haired rebel Kelly in the original Bad News Bears franchise). 1-2-Emily's Freddy's comin' for you.....

Girl, You Lost Your Weave

If you live in Riverside or around the Downtown area there's no doubt that you have spotted some "tumble weave" during your ventures around the urban core. We've even taken some pictures of lost locks and passed them around the news room for laughs on occasion. Well, now there's a website dedicated to just that.....lost weave. Click on over to Girl, You Lost Your Weave for a plethora of eyewitness accounts (pictures). "My side hurts from laughing so hard", says Jason, our Editor.

Accidental Dong

This is totally our kind of website. Check out Accidental Dong, a website that takes, seemingly, regular photos and spots the nasty in them. Rather, they find the male genitalia in all sorts of random places. Here are just a couple of our favorites, but please take a gander at the entire site for sheer enjoyment.

Celebrity Sightings

You guys know that we usually joke around and try to find people around Jacksonville who just resemble celebrities, but this week we bring you....ACTUAL CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS. This past Friday night Jason was asked by JC's good friend Kerry Speckman with Jacksonville Magazine to fill in for her while Nene Leakes from The Real Housewives of Atlanta was in town for an "Empowerment Conference" put on by Truth 2 Power Ministries and First Baptist Church. Both Jason and Kerry were under the impression that we would have full access to Ms. Leakes for a few promo photos and light discussion, well...that didn't happen, her PR lady was a total bitch. Jason did get the honor of meeting Nene, she was very sweet and gracious but was also surrounded by a barrage of security guards and yappy publicists. Needless to say we only got a couple of pics, and they aren't the greatest....

Then on Saturday, our good friends Marie and Paul, from Marietta, had the extreme pleasure of dining at Woodfire Grill in Atlanta where Top Chef contestant Kevin Gillespie cooks. He's still in the race to win and is probably our favorite. Even if he doesn't he has a promising career according to Marie who said that everything was absolutely delicious....

Finally, Juliette Lewis was in town last week performing at Jack Rabbits with her band and faithful readers Effie and Jacklyn got in the picture for a great photo opp. Check it....

Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty Remastered

The Beastie Boys have been quite busy lately pumping out remastered editions of their past works. This week we have the newly remaster production of Hello Nasty....Streaming. Check it out.

New Cruisers Grill Location

Jacksonville Confidential's "Den Mother" Linda informs us that Cruiser's Grill ("home of the best burger ever") is coming to Lakewood. They are moving in where Atlanta Bread Company was on San Jose Blvd, across from the Winn Dixie on University Blvd. In the same plaza as Tijiuana Flats. Here is their website and menu. Linda says that she can, "personally vouch that EVERYTHING on the menu is great!" and that she is, "so excited, but my waistline isn't ;-("

Spotted

Jason spotted Wendy at the Wendy's in Riverside today during lunch. She's looking a tad haggard wouldn't ya say? What would Dave Thomas think of his beloved daughter now?

Clean Up Jacksonville - An Update

Early this week we showed you guys some handwritten signs on cardboard located under the College Street I-95 overpass near Riverside Park and we were like, "WTF"? Well, a bunch of other people were scratching their heads as well and a few of our faithful readers have come up with some answers...

An Anonymous reader told us, "Basically some guys cleaned up some garbage and stuff and built these ledges that kids liked to skate on. Then someone came and turned it all to rubble."

And then Norm sent us over this link to fellow bloggers BusStop Mag, complete with a video "Ode to Riverside Ledges".

Jason stopped by the scene of the crime this afternoon and noticed that a new sign has risen. Simply stated, "WTF?".

AJ's Riverside Cafe BBQ on Park Street

Nearly legendary "St. Louis BBQ" joint AJ's Riverside Cafe has moved from it's May Street location to the constantly vacated building that Hot Rods, Sharx Wings, and Skips Cafe most recently occupied. For the first time ever we are pretty excited to see new ownership of the building at 630 Park Street right next to Gay Bear Bar 616. For years AJ's has been hosting and participating in local Jacksonville events, most notably "Dancing in the Streets" and weekly "Block Parties", and we welcome the addition with open arms. Next stop, a review in the next few weeks.

Boycott Buju Banton

We have some very disturbing news to share with you. Buju Banton, the anti-gay Jamaican dance hall, ragga, and reggae singer, whose song "Boom Bye Bye" advocates killing gay men with submachine guns and by pouring acid on them, is coming to four Florida cities. We've included information on dates, times, venue locations and contact information for the promoters of his Rasta Got Soul Tour. Please contact them and express your outrage that they are promoting this hateful tour. We invite you to join the groups leading the movement to "Cancel Buju Banton Rasta Got Soul Tour 2009. Wetpaint" and on Facebook (Click the Links) to be kept in the loop on any actions planned for Florida and/or other States. With time being crucial, our best course of action at this time, is to contact and pressure promoters to cancel Florida's venues.

According to the Minnesota Independent, "In 2004, Buju Banton was investigated over the beatings of six gay men in Jamaica’s capital city of Kingston; he was acquitted in 2006 for lack of evidence. Human rights activists pointed out at the time that Jamaican authorities tend not to handle such cases aggressively".

There's some good news, after pressure by GLBT and anti-hate groups, they succeeded in getting promoters to cancel Buju Banton venues in Salt Lake City, Columbus Ohio and Minneapolis. Add to this, promoters AEG and Live Nation canceled six of his shows due to outrage from LGBT groups in Chicago and Los Angeles. Richmond, Virginia achieved a victory by getting the Buju Banton moved, which was scheduled to take place on the very same day as the 25th Anniversary of the Virginia Pride Festival. While the show hasn't yet been canceled, where the show has been moved to has not been announced.

Let us work together to add Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami and Orlando to this list. Below is the list of Florida venue info, you'll find a link to a video of Buju performing his song "Boom Bye Bye." (above). It's difficult to understand him, except when he clearly says "There is no end to the war between me and faggots!", so included is the English translation and explanation of the lyrics.

Engrish

We've received quite a few Engrish submissions throughout last week and decided to just aggregate them all into one big post. Of course, none of them beat our winner of "Most Engrish in a Restaurant Menu 2009" from Al Hilm - The Dream Cafe and Hookah Lounge, but good none-the-less.

First we have a couple of selections sent by our News Room Chief Mark. Johnsons Family Flea Market is having a "Chrstmas in July" sale in September (double whammy), and the Riverside Avondale Preservation Society printed up some Neighborhood Watch "No Tresspassing" signs for last weeks meeting.

Then, sometime staff member, Tom sent over the picture below from The Terrace at Fleming Island Plantation Retirement Home. His grandmother is a resident and often has the pleasure of dining with her companions in the "Dinning Room" there. Of course "dinning" is a word, but we're assuming that this is not what's going on in that room -

din |din|
noun [in sing. ]
a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise : the fans made an awful din.
verb ( dinned , dinning )
1 [ trans. ] ( be dinned into) (of a fact) be instilled in (someone) by constant repetition : the doctrine that has been dinned into all our heads.
2 [ intrans. ] make a loud, unpleasant, and prolonged noise : the sound dinning in my ears was the telephone ringing.
ORIGIN Old English dyne, dynn (noun), dynian (verb), of Germanic origin; related to Old High German tuni (noun) and Old Norse dynr (noun), dynja ‘come rumbling down.’

Finally we have a picture from Jacksonville Confidential reader Kane who was vacationing in Mt. Carmel, Illinois and spotted this very crude "Pakring" sign at the local VFW.

Thanks guys and keep reading and submitting.

Black Dynamite

Oh snap! We cannot wait to go check out Black Dynamite, a new "blaxploitation" film coming out to theaters soon. We noticed Arsenio Hall, basically, reprising his role from "Coming to America", Pam Grier (she's awesome), and Tommy Davidson (from "In Living Color"). Just check it...

Clean Up Jacksonville

WTF is going on here? Joe(y) snapped this photo on College Street underneath the I-95 overpass, near Riverside Park. One of the signs says something about the City "tearing our benches out", which perplexes us because we can't remember benches ever being under that overpass. The next sign is more obvious...yes, if the City left this "mess" they should certainly clean it up. WTF is going on here?.....

Please STOP the Music, er...Don't?

OMFGGF's did anyone catch Charo at the 2009 MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon this past Monday (Labor Day)? Well, she "performed" Please Don't Stop the Music after she rambled on about god-knows-what and it was effin HILARIOUS! Why is this woman famous and why in the world do we all love her so much. The only thing that could have possibly made this any better would have been Walter Mercado walking out on stage to predict how many donations the telethon was going to receive. Just watch....

This post is dedicated to Julio and the entire Martinez Family.

American Idol + Ellen Degeneres = Refreshing

The people over at FOX have been in discussions for weeks about replacing pill-head Paula Abdul as a judge on American Idol and to our great pleasure they have decided to replace her with Ellen Degeneres. That's some of the most awesome TV news we've heard in ages. Click Here to read the full article from People.

We don't want to leave you guys without showing you some of Paula's best moments on TV from her own reality show Hey Paula.

Separated at Birth

Jacksonville Confidential staff members Robyn and David attended this past Labor Day's Florida State Seminoles vs. Miami Hurricanes game in Tallahassee and who the eff did they spot a few rows down from them in the stands? None other than JONAH HILL!!! Star of Superbad, Acceptance, Funny People, and a slew of other hilarious movies. He must be researching a part or something, his hair was way longer and he had a caterpillar on his chin (goatee). Good eye guys!

THIS JUST IN - FREE BEER AT EUROPEAN STREET TONIGHT!

You guys read that right. Tonight from 6-8 the European Street Cafe on Park Street is giving away FREE BEER. Pop in and sample 5 different varieties from Star Hill Brewery. European Street will also be having some special pricing on the brewery's Jomo and Love brands and you even get to keep the glass! See you guys there!

New Basil Thai & Sushi in Baymeadows

One of our faithful readers from Atlantic Beach sent us an e-mail over the weekend about a brand new Basil Thai that has opened up on the Southside at Baymeadows Road and 9A, we're just gonna let you guys see the entire correspondence because we think it's rather succinct.....

"Guys, Go check this place out (Basil Thai & Sushi).....Baymeadows and 9A, incredibly good. I was impressed. then again I'm easily swayed. Basil Thai has done it again, they have opened a new restaurant and a full bar in the Baymeadows.......Their new place is just as welcoming as the first, and a whole lot larger. They have a really nice spacious lounge, (this is where we ate), they boast 7 HDTV'S (I counted five). Great happy hour 2-4-1 on all beers, wells, calls, and wines $7.00 or less (their wine list is tremendous offering 36 by the glass; lots of choices). Same great food maybe even a little better, (a whole lot cheaper).

We started off with the Seared Ahi Tuna. Nice portion of tuna dusted with sesame seeds and seared to rare, sliced thin served in a green curry sauce the sauce was cold but, against the hot tuna this was delightful. ($8.00)

My date had ordered the Mussuman Curry with Beef at a spice level 3 server said this was like the Thai grandmothers pot roast. Beef, onions, carrots, and potatoes with roasted peanuts in an orange curry sauce. spice level was a little hot but the flavors were incredible. ($14.00)

I had the Crispy Duck at a spice level 3. this was perfect. half a duck fried then simmered in a Thai spicy chili paste topped with sauteed onions, carrots, asparagus, and pea pods ($22.00). We also had a bottle of B.V. Tapestry for only ($45.00)

The presentation was nice and the service was friendly and spot on, the restaurant is beautiful. They have patio dining in a quaint little garden like atmosphere as well. These guys really know how to impress.

Our server said they have the NFL Sunday Ticket and the College Gameday with food and drink specials all day. This I am anxious foe....nice place good food affordable prices. Way to go Basil Thai."

Thanks for the awesome info! We frequent the original Basil Thai over here in San Marco and am excited that all you guys further East and South can now enjoy some delicious Thai food closer to home.

Engrish

Holy smokes! We told you guys in our fairly positive review of Al Hilm - The Dream Cafe and Hookah Bar that we would be doing a follow up Engrish post. Well we have a treat for you guys, we are going to go ahead and bestow the title of "Most Engrish in a Restaurant Menu 2009" to the venue. That's right, even though we are only about 3/4ths of the way through the year we feel pretty confident that AL Hilm will win....HANDS DOWN! Check it out....

May we suggest that the owners of Al Hilm give our good friend Joe(y) over at Compound Graphics a call if they want to re-do these terrible menus and special thanks to Hank for the photos.

Separated at Birth

Whew! So many sights at the Landing yesterday during the Krystal Square Off. We spotted Zoila from Bravo's show Flipping Out in the crowd cheering on Hall Hunt (without all the show production make-up obviously). Check it, uncanny.

IFOCE's #1 Fan

While attending the Krystal Square Off this afternoon we spotted the International Federation of Competitive Eating's (IFOCE) #1 Fan (the chick in the pink, obviously). This chick was TOTALLY into it, watch her bust some moves (and hopefully not a hip).

Krystal Square Off VI

Local food eating champion Hall "Hoover" Hunt (Gator Fan - AKA the Tim Tebow of competitive eating) mesmerized the crowd today at the Jacksonville Landing for the Krystal Square Off VI by devouring 65 Krystal hamburgers in just 8 minutes. Hall set the record for the most Krystals eaten in 8 minutes in the state of Florida. He is also ranked #7 in the World by the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) (and #1 in our hearts). We've got video of the entire 8 minutes in heaven (yum, Hall) and some random pictures from the event below.

Ms. Jenkins

We took in a guilty pleasure this morning, Divorce Court, and we spotted some shady husband tryin' to talk all bad about Ms. Jenkins. "Aint nobody betta be talkin bad bout Miss Jenkins, but you know what I heard about that old crow......?" Someone's about to get a caning.

Punky Brewster is Back

Actress Soleil Moon Frye is celebrating her 1 millionth Twitter follower by bringing back her claim to fame character Punky Brewster from the 80's.

Punky Brewster is a show about a girl named Penelope "Punky" Brewster. She is abandoned with her dog, Brandon in a supermarket by her mother. She doesn't want to stay in an orphanage, and finally befriends Henry Warnimont who adopts her.
"Holy Macanoli!" and "Grossaroo!" give it up for "Punky Power!"

Gay

Jacksonville Confidential reader Erin F. forwarded over this YouTube video of her cousin performing Miley Cyrus' teenie bopper song "Party in the USA" while he and some other light loafered fellows let loose on New Yorks notoriously gay Fire Island. Check it out.

Car Art

Faithful Jacksonville Confidential reader Tom spotted a Geo Tracker the other day sporting some sexy car art while tooling around town. "40 and Sexy", I'll say! It looks like this cougar (wolf?) is just clawing to get out and devour some young unsuspecting boys. GROWL!

Beastie Boys - Doublecheck Your Head

Music producer and DJ Max Tannone has put together a FREE Beastie Boys "Check Your Head" remix album called "Doublecheck Your Head". He created this project in support of the Beastie Boys recent reissue of their "Check Your Head" album (one of our favorites). The concept is that the Beastie Boys are mashed up with themselves, rapping over tracks sampling their own instrumentals, with all vocals and sampled elements coming from "Check Your Head". We're previewing it right now and so far, so good. CLICK HERE to download the entire thing (the download should automatically start).

Spotted

Last night during our weekly "Jacksonville Confidential Monday Night Dinner", hosted by our News Room Chief Mark and catered by staff member Becky, we spotted an antique Patti Playpal doll being "choked out" on A&E's newest addicting show Hoarders by one of the hoard "interventionists". Hoarder Tara was appalled. Here's a little history on Patti Playpal -

""Patti Playpal" was made by the Ideal Toy Corporation from 1959 through approximately 1962. She is very large (approximately 35 inches high). Other companies made similar sized dolls during the same time period, but Patti Playpal was the most popular and of the best quality. These types of dolls are often referred to as "companion dolls" as they were meant to be approximately the same size as a three year old child and act as a playmate. Many of these dolls were also "walkers" in that if you held their hands and slightly tilted them side to side, their legs would move and actually "walk" with you."
Thanks for the awesome spaghetti and meatball feast Becky. To all of you who are wondering what happened to Patti Playpal, she lived to see another day. We are always big proponents of a happy ending.
